Fan brings ‘Link’s Awakening’ into the world of 3D

March 18th, 2009 by Xav de Matos

With the power of 3DsMax8 in hand, a Nintendo fan going by the name of MithosKuu has decided to completely render the classic GameBoy title, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening in 3D. After revealing the first pieces of Koholint Island in September 2008, the 3D transformation is complete.

Using the freshly made 3D hunting ground, beta testing for the proof of concept zChicken Hunter Extreme (MegaUpload) has begun. MithosKuu is asking all users to play with the beta and report back to help fix issues with the environment … unless you’re a lawyer for Nintendo in which case there’s nothing to see here and this has nothing to do with the Link’s Awakening you’re thinking of.

Fairies are the most annoying ever

July 29th, 2008 by Wii Fanboy Staff

Filed under:

The chaps at GamesRadar have compiled a list of the most annoying female game characters of all time. It’s a standard “Top Whatever” ranking, with seven (not six, not eight?) entries. For the most part, it seems to accurately summarize the worst characters in a few non-Nintendo games, but we’re a bit shocked at number one.

Navi, everyone’s favorite helpful fairy from Ocarina of Time is deemed as the most annoying. The reasoning behind this is simple — LISTEN! HEY! HEY! HEY! LISTEN! HEY! LISTEN! LISTEN! LISTEN! LISTEN! HEY! … sound familiar? Sure, but was it really that bad? Some might call Navi’s sweet little voice a siren song, other might want to smack the little insect with a giant flyswatter. What’s your take on the pint-size companion?

Fear and Loathing + Link = Wii Fanboy love

February 13th, 2008 by David Hinkle

Hey, our love may not be worth much, but it’s got to be worth something.

The above parody of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas includes Link and a lot of stuff gamers will recognize. Aside from including a cat screaming about this being bat country, we can’t imagine this video being done any better than this. Kudos to 8-bit Cinema!

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 3D remake wanted by Zelda series director

November 13th, 2007 by supadupagama

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past for GBA (DS)Eiji Aonuma, the designer/director on the recent Zelda games, was interviewed in the latest issue of the UK’s Official Nintendo Magazine. In the interview he made the following interesting quote:

“Ocarina of Time was the first title I worked on, and I was continuously tackling challenges every day during its development, so I think this is the title I feel I impacted the most. I believe that experience made me what I am now. I always think about what we couldn’t do and what didn’t work well in the previous game when we start a new title, but there’s no game that I would want to actually change as such. I have to say though, the first Zelda game that I played and felt potential in was Link to the Past. I’m actually very interested in what it would be like if we remade that title as a 3D game“.

Mr. Aonuma also states that he’s constantly thinking about what can be done in the next Zelda title that will surprise gamers. As far as graphics go, he can’t really say what approach the team will take. It depends on what visual style will best work with the story and gameplay. He says that the next Zelda could even end up with a graphical style that we didn’t even think of yet. — Transcribed by Gonintendo

3D Link to the Past ‘interests’ Aonuma

OK, show of hands, please: who fancies a 3D remake of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past? If your arm just shot up, know this: you're far from alone. Series director Eiji Aonuma wants it, as well. Or at least, he's "very interested" in adding an extra dimension to what is arguably probably unquestionably the greatest Zelda game ever conceived.

Aonuma, who most recently acted as director on the DS's splendiferous Phantom Hourglass, revealed his wish in the latest issue of the Official Nintendo Magazine (the UK edition), stating that "The first Zelda game that I played and felt potential in was Link to the Past. I'm actually very interested in what it would be like if we remade that title as a 3D game."

Now, we confess that's a loooong way from us actually getting a 3D Link to the Past, but the mere fact that Aonuma has even considered this makes our legs go all wobbly. If you've never played the game, and therefore can't comprehend that reaction, then we suggest you stop reading, head over to the Virtual Console now, and commence downloading. For $8, it's a quite obscene bargain.

Rapping, puppetry, and misogyny: Zelda commercials through the ages

November 5th, 2007 by Chris Greenhough

This compilation of western and Japanese Zelda TV commercials is by no means comprehensive, but it does feature three or four that are new to us. Some are just downright peculiar -- the second Legend of Zelda advert recalls David Lynch's Eraserhead -- and there's clearly been an unsettling amount of rapping involved in the marketing of the series, something we hadn't noticed previously. The advert for Twilight Princess is utterly tame in comparison.

No doubt you'll have seen a couple of these about a gazillion times (the Ocarina of Time commercial from the days when Nintendo didn't think twice about calling you a weak little girl, and the fabulously dorky "Your parents help you hook it up!" ad from the late-'80s), but it's still worth a watch for the more obscure stuff, some of which even manages to out-weird Sony's recent output. And that's a heck of an achievement.

New Link’s Crossbow Training screens show us old haunts

October 30th, 2007 by Candace Savino

Those of you salivating for a quick dose of Link's Crossbow Training, fret no more! New screens have arrived, for your viewing pleasure. The quality of these shots aren't as nice as the ones we previously showed you, but you can get the gist of the game.

For the most part, you're put in Twilight Princess environments (like the Snowpeak Ruins, shown above). This makes sense, considering the game is only a pack-in using the Twilight Princess engine, but it might not be enough to inspire Europeans to shell out the extra cash for a zapper. We suppose only time will tell.

Dojo update: Classic mode

October 30th, 2007 by David Hinkle

Today's update over at the dojo involves Classic Mode, the formal single player campaign of the game where you progress through various stages, battling random enemies until you reach the end. The matches can vary in that sometimes you'll fight opponents who are metal or giant, and occasionally you'll have teammates. The stages chosen are the same every time, however, as stage 1 is Link's and stage 3 is Pokemon, etc.
