Too Cool for Internet Explorer

Screens, video from LOTR: Aragorn’s Quest are just adorable

May 30th, 2009 by Justin McElroy

Look at him! Couldn’t you just eat the little guy up with a spoon? We’re getting our first looks at screens and video (check after the break) from family-friendly Lord of the Rings: Aragorn’s Quest, and they’re just precious. If you think Lil’ Aragorn is cute, wait until you see the kiddy-fied hobbits. They’re like squishable, baby-shaped teddy bears.

On a completely unrelated note, do you think we could crack open J.R.R. Tolkien’s coffin and use his spinning corpse to power a small generator? Just curious.

Scribblenauts coming this fall, thanks to Warner Bros. [update]

May 1st, 2009 by JC Fletcher

[Update: New trailer! Go watch it!]

5th Cell’s completely insane “write anything” platformer Scribblenauts just got one step closer to release: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced that it had acquired the publishing rights to the game and will release it in North America this fall. Hopefully WB can spare some of the money it’s gathered in its nine decades of business to advertise a DS game!

In case you’d somehow forgotten about one of the coolest DS game ideas ever, Scribblenauts asks players to discover and reach hidden “Starites” in levels using items generated by written words. Check out the new screens WBIE sent with the announcements! Apparently you can make a band.

E308: Wii Fanboy sets records in Guinness World Records: The Videogame

July 23rd, 2008 by David Hinkle

Filed under:

Aside from knowing the game exists, I didn’t have anything else to go on when I came across Guinness World Records: The Videogame at my closed-door session in the back of the Warner Bros. meeting room at E3. When the game was revealed, I figured it would just be another cookie-cutter mini-game compilation that didn’t hold much value. Actually, I was wrong, as Guiness World Records is a pretty fun title.

The majority of the game has you traveling to various locales throughout the world and competing in the three available mini-games for that region. You travel by walking your avatar (sorry, no Mii support!) across a large globe that represents the world. Once you have arrived at your destination, you simply click on it to jump in and check out what’s there. Some of the locales I saw included Egypt and South Africa, which was nice because it doubled as a geography refresher.

While the demo didn’t have every region available, it did have quite the number of mini-games to play. Sadly, my appointment was really just for LEGO Batman, so I only got a few minutes with the game while I waited. In this amount of time, I was able to smash some watermelons with my head and shoot myself out of a cannon.

Each of the mini-games required some sort of motion-based controls, which have been implemented decently. For example, in the watermelon mini-game, I was forced to smash oncoming watermelons with my head, flicking the Wiimote down to represent this action in-game. The motion controls never skipped a beat and I performed quite well, proving to me that the controls work well and have been instituted quite effectively.

Guiness World Records: The Videogame will support Wi-Fi leaderboards, allowing you to compare your score with friends online. Sadly, that’s the only Wi-Fi feature in the game, as players can’t enjoy multiplayer online. But, there’s definitely support for local multiplayer, which is great because this strikes me as geared toward the social crowd and the younger audience.

In the end, I was pleasantly surprised by Guiness World Records: The Videogame. It was a genuinely fun time and not a piece of shovelware that I expected it would be. The mini-games were engaging and actually controlled well, which was very nice. Fans of fun mini-game compilations should definitely keep their eyes on this one.

Speed Racer videos show cars chasin’ after someone

April 25th, 2008 by Candace Savino

Barring those ridiculously annoying mid-race voice-overs from your competing racers, we still like what we’re seeing from Speed Racer. Originally, we thought the roads looked too narrow to pass anyone, but it seems like you can also flip over other racers (which is pretty sweet). We’re also still insanely curious about the music. Considering the game’s F-Zero and Wipeout influences, it has a lot to live up to in terms of soundtrack.

We’ve embedded another video below that was labeled as a “Stunt Gameplay” trailer, which shows the player (in Racer X’s car?) tossing other racers of the way, among other things.

Lego Batman to hit Wiis next year

November 13th, 2007 by Candace Savino

Filed under:

TT Games officially announced today that the next game in the LEGO franchise, LEGO Batman: The Videogame, is coming out on the Wii (and pretty much every other system). The game will be made by the same development team that made the popular LEGO Star Wars games.

LEGO Batman not only lets you play as Batman and Robin, but you can also play as the bad guys. The press release didn't specify whether or not villain control will be limited to certain sections of the game or available throughout, but it's still a nice feature to add. More things to look forward to include the vehicle construction feature, utilizing Batman's gadgetry, and a two player co-op mode.

We're 100% convinced that this game is going to rock our world. The game is schedule for a Fall 2008 release, though, and we just don't know how we're going to wait that long. Ah, the sweet, sweet torture of it all.

Lego Star Wars developer travels to Warner

November 8th, 2007 by JC Fletcher

Travellers' Tales, the British developer most recently known for their Lego Star Wars series, will soon be acquired by Warner Bros. Luckily, this does not spell the end of their popular series, as they have announced that they will maintain their current partnerships with Lego and LucasArts. Quite a relief for those looking forward to the upcoming Lego Indiana Jones game.

Just about the only relationship this new acquisition calls into question is that between Travellers' Tales and Sega. TT has had a longstanding partnership with Sega, developing high-profile games like Sonic R, Sonic 3D Blast and Super Monkey Ball Adventure. Of course, those aren't the best three Sega games, so maybe it's not much of a problem for them to be off the market.
