Welcome back, Twilight Hack

June 22nd, 2008 by JC Fletcher

Filed under:

The very day that Nintendo released their anti-Twilight Hack update, clever programmer types found the new code and figured out how to beat it. Team Twiizers has made practical use of that information, releasing their own update of the Twilight Hack save file. If you were worried about having to go a whole week without homebrew, you can relax.

While they were sprucing the code up with the Wii Menu 3.3 compatibility, Team Twiizers added a few other nice modifications, including better video configuration, region-specific save file icons, and Twilight Hack-specific “Still Alive” parody lyrics hidden inside the LOADER file. That’s, uh, totally a feature!

Now get out there and brew some homes!

November 30th, 2007 by astrotriforce

Xbox 360 2007 Fall Update
Some more new features have been added to the fall Xbox 360 firmware update on December 4th.

These new additions will follow the previously announced “Family Timer” (which limits the amount of playtime the 360 can have per week or even per day, for parents who want absolute control of what their kid plays), Xbox Originals (Original Xbox games that you can download to your 360 via the Marketplace for $15 each) and a new “Friends of Friends” feature that lets you see your Friends’ Friends list. You’ll also be able to set your name, location and a brief bio as part of a social networking-style addition to the service.

1600 Microsoft Points Card for use on Xbox LiveAnd now the update will also include the Xbox Live Arcade Hits program, which will give us a discount for older Xbox Live Arcade downloadable titles. The first group of Arcade Hits will be: Bankshot Billiards 2 and Lumines Live!, both of which will cost only $10 (1200 Microsoft Points) now down from $15. And Marble Blast Ultra, Zuma Deluxe and Small Arms, which will cost $5 ($400) down from $10.

A new “Inside Xbox” news ticker will appear just below your gamercard on the Xbox Live blade. And it will show any update to the service, including new games added that week. There will also be a number of smaller updates, although none the less significant. You can now view previews in full-screen, and there is support for DivX and Xvid video files. People who were minors when they bought the system but are now adults will now be treated as such, and see their chat and IM features enabled. And you’ll also have the ability to change your Windows Live ID (passport) that’s associated with your Xbox Live account. — Via Joystiq

World of Warcraft patch 2.3 adds guild banks, faster leveling, and the Gods of Zul’Aman

November 14th, 2007 by supadupagama

World of Warcraft leveling up screenshotThe latest World of Warcraft Patch 2.3.0 has been released for download by Blizzard. This is the most recent patch for World of Warcraft updating the popular MMORPG from version 2.2.3 to version 2.3. This includes a new 10-person raid Zul’Aman picking up where Karazhan leaves off, guild banks, faster leveling, and more as described here…

The Gods of Zul’Aman
The stronghold of Zul’Aman has stood for millennia as the Amani trolls’ seat of power and bastion of the fearless, cunning warlord Zul’jin.

Zul’jin has spent several years plotting behind Zul’Aman’s walls. Furious at the Horde for allowing his hated enemies, the blood elves, to join its ranks, he eagerly embraced a scheme that the witch doctor Malacrass recently proposed: to seal the power of the animal gods within the bodies of the Amani’s strongest warriors.

Now Zul’Aman’s army grows more powerful by the day, hungry to exact vengeance in the name of its fearless leader, Zul’jin.

Guild Banks Introduced
The Guild Bank is a shared repository for an entire guild and will be accessible through Guild Vault objects near existing banks. The Guild Bank will allow players with the appropriate permissions to store items and money for use by the rest of the guild. Permissions to withdraw and deposit money and items are controlled by the guild leader through the guild controls menu. The Guild Bank is divided up into separate tabs so that the guild leader may restrict access or group items into distinct categories.
- Up to 6 purchasable tabs each containing 98 item slots
- Permissions to view/deposit/withdraw per tab
- You may use your Guild Bank withdraw limits to pay for item repairs
(now enabled on all merchants)
- Transaction logs of the last 25 actions within each tab, as well as
money activity.

Dustwallow Marsh
Dustwallow Marsh has seen many improvements with the addition of over 50 new quests and a new neutral goblin town called Mudsprocket located in the southern part of the zone. There is also a small quest hub featuring a crashed goblin zeppelin, to the east of Tabetha’s hut.

You can read the other details of Patch 2.3.0 below.

Many DVD Players also support DivXThe popular DivX video codec is soon coming to the PlayStation 3! This support will be added in a future firmware update. DivX CEO Kevin Hell hinted that DivX support is also coming to the Xbox 360!

To quote: “During the SMid Cap conference call with investment firm JP Morgan, Hell was asked if the recent deal that will see DivX codecs shipped with new versions of Microsoft’s standalone Media Center Extenders means that such support will also be arriving on the Xbox 360. ‘Yes!’ was his immediate reply, although he quickly qualified that confirmation with a disclaimer that the deal was still in the negotiation process and had not yet been finalized.” — Via Slashdot

PS: The most recent PS3 2.0 firmware has the ability to detect both DivX and Xvid files, but not yet play them.

Wii and DS USB Wi-Fi Adapter upgrade includes Windows Vista support (thanks Nintendo!)

October 28th, 2007 by astrotriforce

Use the USB Wi-Fi Adapter to connect Wii or DS to the InternetNintendo has upgraded it’s Wii & DS USB Wi-Fi Adapter to include support for the Microsoft Windows Vista Operating System. FINALLY!

What does this mean you ask?

Well if you use the USB Adapter to get your Wii or DS online, you may have noticed that it will only work on computers running Windows XP. If you had Windows Vista, then you were out of luck. Until now there was no official way to get around the problem and Nintendo had been mum on when it would upgrade the program to run with Windows Vista. Now they have!

And this picture is proof:
Wii and DS USB Wi-Fi Adapter Vista Upgrade

If you have the device then download the Wii & DS USB Wi-Fi Adapter Vista upgrade directly from Nintendo to update your program right now!

I recently bought a laptop that includes Vista and couldn’t use the USB Adapter with it. Now I can! Yay!

By the way, in case you missed it, Nintendo also recently upgraded the Wii system to include support for USB keyboards (which can plug directly in the back of the Wii console), and that includes the ability to use the keyboard with sending Wii messages as well as while surfing the Internet with the Wii! It’s a huge help. Apparently the keyboard doesn’t work with the Everybody Votes Channel though . . . at least it didn’t when I tried it. — Via GoNintendo

Nintendo mysteriously updates Everybody Votes, Opera throws the browser a keyboard bone

October 10th, 2007 by Alisha Karabinus

It was a big day for Nintendo fans. Not only did we get some great announcements out of a surprise conference in Japan, but we were greeted by the friendly blue glow when we were able to tear ourselves away from said news and actually look at our beloved consoles.

While exciting on the face, though, today's update ends up being less than thrilling. Much-needed keyboard functionality came to the Opera browser, but it's still limited, and the Wii remote must be used to navigate through text boxes. Take the average search form as an example; at the computer, most of the time, you can type in your search terms and hit enter -- or at the most, tab to the search button and then hit enter. No such luck with the Wii's browser. It's more like this:
  1. Navigate to text box with Wii remote
  2. Enter text on keyboard
  3. Navigate to enter/search button with Wii remote
  4. Profit. Very slow and awkward profit, but better than a poke in the eye with ye olde sharp stick.

All of this would have been great with the last update, but now it's a little disappointing. We can only hope that another update is soon to follow that makes keyboards a little more useful. For now, it seems best to continue to use the browser sparingly. It's great for showing off YouTube videos to friends from the comfort of your sofa, but for any high-powered browsing, chatting, or forum-hopping, we'll recommend you stick to your computer. Unless, of course, you want to check out Wii Fanboy. Then we're with you 100%.

Logitech announced today that they're planning a special Wii keyboard for use with the system and the Opera browser. We're gonna guess that it will look and function much like a keyboard (shocking!) and that it will be white. But wouldn't it be awesome if it included a pointer? It could be like this, but smaller. Now that we'd consider.

The Everybody Votes channel was updated as well, and we'll give anyone a shiny new nickel if they can tell us what's new. There may be a new background or something, but updates seem to be cosmetic at best. We'll say they're clearly great if we don't even notice! But maybe we'll spy the purported enhancements over time.

In the meantime, we would like to offer an illustrated (but not well) version of our adventures with the updated Internet Channel.

At last, dear friends, we can use the internet in our living rooms like civilized people, without a laptop perched upon our knees. Instead, we can sprawl out across the sofa, one shoe dangling, arm flung out so that we don't have to share, and alternate between a keyboard and a Wii remote.

Okay, so it's still a little unwieldy, but hey, baby steps.

After that joke search, I tried something real. Something exciting. Sonic! And hey, look at that new search bar. Spiffy.

Which of course led me straight to the recent megaton. Sonic in Smash Bros.! And there was much rejoicing. Except ... what's with the video? Hitting play yielded nothing, so I thought, well, let's check out another one. Maybe YouTube.

But alas, embedded YouTube videos left a big ol' blank space. Not attractive.

So of course, I went to YouTube, just in case videos were broken. You can see the keyboard here. Keyboards make typing fun.

They weren't! Whew, that's a sigh of relief. Must celebrate with some Zelda music videos.

And then a trip to NeoGAF, just to appreciate typing a little more. I like typing. Especially with a real keyboard.

All in all, this is a step in the right direction, but we need more. We need page down functionality, we need tabbing, and we need the enter key to work as more than just a line return. But we'll take this for now!
