Fragile arrives on European shores early 2010

June 26th, 2009 by David Hinkle

The tri-Crescendo-developed Namco Bandai RPG, Fragile, will eventually make its way to Europe, GameSpot reports. Sometime in early 2010, Europeans will be able to get their own taste of this post-apocalyptic title following Seto, who is believed to be the last living human being. It’s kind of like I Am Legend, but, like, bearable.

Made by the same team behind Eternal Sonata, Fragile is currently set to release in North America during the holidays courtesy of XSEED, and will arrive in Europe via Rising Star Games.

DSi blows up UK sales charts

April 7th, 2009 by Justin McElroy

We don’t know if it’s their love of dual cameras or their hatred for GBA slots, but people in the UK can’t get enough of the DSi. The console has become the fourth-fastest selling in their history, even beating out the original DS and DS Lite, according to GfK-ChartTrack. Only the PSP, PS3 and Wii have done better.

GfK-ChartTrack spokesman Chris Poole says the company also noted a bump in DS software sales, especially impressive when you consider that there aren’t any DSi-specific games on shelves.

Playing Tetris helps with trauma, study says

January 7th, 2009 by David Hinkle

Filed under:

We’ve always been big fans of Tetris, to tell the truth, and now it would seem the game has real health benefits. According to a study done in the UK, the game can help those with post-traumatic stress disorder. The study exposed volunteers to disturbing imagery and, for some, allowed them to play the game after. For those that played the game, stress levels reduced and they suffered from fewer flashbacks of the disturbing imagery.

So, make more time in your busy life to play some games. It’s good for you!

Wii Fit helps amputees adjust in the UK

January 7th, 2009 by David Hinkle

Filed under:

Despite some saying that Wii Fit is only gathering dust in the closet, UK amputees are using the software and bundled Balance Board to help them with their treatment. This isn’t the first we’ve heard about a Nintendo product helping folks out with their physical therapy, but this is definitely one of the most interesting. Rather than just getting people to be more active by playing Wii Sports or something, the Balance Board and Wii Fit software are helping people adapt to their new prosthetic limbs. From walking to simply leaning, it’s helping them adapt to their new, albeit very unfortunate, way of life.

Mario & Sonic & An Unhealthy Obsession

December 31st, 2008 by Chris Greenhough

“I predict that it will sell 4 copies total.”

“I feel that this game will bomb but only because of the olympic theme.”

“Ha ha ha!”

Those are just a small number of your initial responses to Sega’s prediction that Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games would sell four million copies worldwide. Not that we’re bragging at our readers’ expense, for we also pooh-poohed the notion. Over a year on from our mocking laughs, and Sega is now hoping to break two million by the end of this year — in the UK alone. Yeesh.

“Our aim is to hit two million by the end of 2008,” Sega UK sales director John Clark has told MCV (the most recent figures, which we assume are from before Christmas, have the title at around 1.75 million across the Wii and DS), adding that the game has more than a 30 per cent attach rate to British Wiis. We shall think twice before snickering into our Earl Gray and crumpets again.

Another Week in Europe

June 28th, 2008 by Chris Greenhough

Filed under:

Even though Wii Fit continues to be as common as chicken teeth everywhere, Nintendo finally seems to be sorting out its Mario Kart Wii stock issues in Europe. After dipping in recent weeks, the racer (which nearly made this blogger sob with frustration at our last Game Night) has risen in Ireland, Holland, and the UK. Wii Play had a fine few days, sensationally nabbing second spot in Britain, while Sports Island is raking in the euros in the Netherlands. Those crazy Dutch.

Not much on the horizon next week, except for some beat-’em-up. Super Crash Bros. Fighter, or something. We forget. Charts follow the break, folks.

Manhunt 2 in the UK: Rockstar knows nothing about it

June 25th, 2008 by Chris Greenhough

Filed under:

A lengthy, to-and-fro legal battle between the BBFC and Rockstar prevented Manhunt 2 from being released in the UK, with the BBFC eventually giving up and granting the game an “18″ certificate in March. Having won its right to lop limbs clean off be released in Britain, it was no surprise that the title appeared in Nintendo’s latest European release schedule this morning.

But wait, for there’s another twist to this twistiest of sagas! A Rockstar spokesperson contacted Eurogamer earlier today to reveal that it “has no confirmed release date set for Manhunt 2 in Europe.” Ho boy. If any Europeans out there are beginning to feel particularly indifferent about Manhunt 2 at this stage, we can’t say we blame you.

Another Week in Europe

June 21st, 2008 by Chris Greenhough

Filed under:

You don’t have to be a gas mask-wearing, telepathic oddball to know what dominated Europe this week. Metal Gear Solid 4’s ascent to numero uno throughout most of Europe was thoroughly predictable, though that’s not to suggest that Wii titles had it rough.

Most managed to maintain high spots (seriously, Britain, what is it about LEGO and Indiana Jones?), while there was a heartwarming comeback for Wii Fit, which finally appears to be getting restocked here. It’s reappeared in the Irish and Dutch top tens, and appears at 11th in the UK. Sports Island debuted in European countries that aren’t Britain this week, and for the most part had a storming start, with a third place in Holland and eighth in Germany. Yet there is also sad news, reader: Okami — beautiful, stunning, endlessly gorgeous Okami — only reached 20th. In Sweden. Gah.

Next week, brace yourselves for the arrival in the charts of Ferrari Challenge and Alone in the Dark (except in Scandinavia, of course).

Check out this week’s charts beyond the break. Lederhosen optional.

Another Week in Europe

June 15th, 2008 by Chris Greenhough

Filed under:

Having watched the in-the-flesh Harrison Ford creak and grimace his way through Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull on the big screen, this week European consumers got a chance to give the LEGO version a leg-up to the top of the charts.

And mostly, that’s just what they did. The Wii edition of LEGO Indiana Jones: Original Adventures showed Grand Theft Auto IV who was boss in the UK by nabbing top spot, and versions for other consoles charted well elsewhere on the continent. It’s no surprise that LEGO Indy did so well in Blighty — we still recall the whole country tripping over itself in the rush to pick up the LEGO Star Wars games. Evidently, the titles have that oft-discussed crossover appeal that most marketing types would slaughter their entire families for.

On a sadder note, Mario Kart Wii bowed out of the Dutch and UK top tens, Deca Sports Sports Island only reached 15th in Britain, and Wii Fit is keeping up its disappearing act … everywhere but Germany. So much for your empty, empty promises, Nintendo! Oh, and the Spanish charts failed to materialize this week, probably because they’re all busy gawking at the footy.

Check out what Europe is buying past the break, and don’t forget to join us next week, when we’ll be sulking about how nobody bought Okami.

Another Week in Europe

April 5th, 2008 by Chris Greenhough

Featuring charts from across the region, Another Week in Europe documents the buying habits and quirky tastes of a whole continent of Wii lovers.

Unlike reigning full beard freestyle world champion Elmar Weisser of Germany (who we admire fiercely), we have mixed feelings about this week’s European sales charts.

For example, while we’re heartened by the success of debutant Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (5th in the UK, and the Wii edition supplemented sales of other versions across Europe — not bad for a game that appeared on every other console last October), we’re irked by the flat performance of House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return (15th in Britain, and nowhere to be seen in the charts of mainland Europe).

Europe, if you’re reading, stop buying Game Party (7th in UK), Smarty Pants (10th in Spain), and Mario & bleeding Sonic (high everywhere) and let’s get something half-decent up there for a change. Sega Bass Fishing should make next week’s chart, so that’d be a good place to start — let’s have that top ten somewhere, please. Sigh. At least Elmar will never fail to impress us.
