Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is … mom-friendly?

June 6th, 2009 by Ludwig Kietzmann

Not even Silent Hill is afraid of the Wii’s casual audience. Speaking to Joystiq during E3 2009, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories producer Tomm Hulett described the game as being very much a true franchise entry (and we can attest to that!), but one that would enjoy the benefits of a wider audience and an intuitive control system on the Wii.

“For the casual gamer, we say this like it’s strange, but casual gamers go to horror movies,” he explained. “There’s a reason that we all started playing survival horror — it was new and different and, ‘Oh, it’s like scary movie that I play.’” According to Hulett the game’s control system, which thrusts the Wiimote into the role of a flashlight, is intuitive enough to accomodate … your mom. “I’ve had my mom try it out and she only plays Animal Crossing, but she can walk around as Harry Mason and run from creatures. It’s really easy to pick up and play. If there’s a casual gamer who enjoys going to the movies and seeing The Ring, they can go to the store afterward and buy Silent Hill and have a horror experience at home.”

Well, as long as they don’t pick up The Room. That’s a different kind of horror experience at home.

Renegade Kid returning to the hospital in Dementium II

June 3rd, 2009 by Jason Dobson

Developer Renegade Kid apparently stumbled across some leftover brown paint, and is currently working up a sequel to Dementium: The Ward. The game is set to continue the story of the first game, which had players stumbling through the darkened grimy halls of an abandoned hospital trying to discover a way out. Or at least some morphine to dull the pain.

Notes Renegade Kid’s Jools Watsham, “We were extremely satisfied with what we accomplished with the original Dementium, but knew we could do even more given the chance to develop a sequel.” Little is known about the return trip into portable madness, though publisher SouthPeak promises even more hospital scares when Dementium II ships for the DS in the first part of 2010.

Dead Space Extraction ‘glow worms’ offer unlimited light, arm cramps

May 6th, 2009 by Jason Dobson

Ammunition is not the only scarcity in Dead Space Extraction. In fact, flashlights seem even more difficult to come by, as miners on Aegis 7 are left to keep their wits about them basked in the comforting greenish hue of a “glow worm.” The game’s equivalent of glow sticks, glow worms offer an unlimited source of light that must be recharged by shaking the Wii remote.

As mentioned following our recent time with the game, the mechanic, which is described in greater detail on EA’s Dead Space blog, certainly ups the scare factor. Still, we can’t help but wonder if — after 10 or so hours of vigorous shaking — these glow worms will leave us clutching our arms, reeling from a wholly different kind of strategic dismemberment.

The terrifying mystery of Cursed Mountain screens

October 29th, 2008 by JC Fletcher

Filed under:

We hope it doesn’t seem to cynical of us if we say we aren’t quite certain these Cursed Mountain screenshots are genuinely captured from the game. For one thing, they are offered on the Cursed Mountain website in a 1280×750 resolution. They also feature graphical effects, like the glow around this ghost, that appear to have been added later. Plus we can tell from some of the pixels.

We don’t want to disparage Deep Silver for (potential) doctoring of early screenshots, because we’d have to take the same position against every developer, ever. At least what they intend to do with Cursed Mountain — a survival horror game set in a haunted Tibetan monastery — is cool and original!

See Resident Evil again for the very first time

September 28th, 2008 by Alisha Karabinus

Resident Evil sure looks familiar, doesn’t it? That’s probably because this latest Capcom port is just the GameCube version with a dash of motion. That isn’t to say it doesn’t look good (it does), it’s just that this game has been remade, reworked, and re-released a lot.

How many times do we need to replay great games — particularly when we can already play them on the system in question?

We’re looking forward to being scared by Fatal Frame

August 2nd, 2008 by David Hinkle

We’ve been keeping a secret. You see, we’re absolutely scared to death of Fatal Frame IV: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse. That’s not going to stop us from picking the game up and playing the crap out of it though. We just felt we needed to share that with you all.

The above video for the game does a good job of depicting exactly what scares us. It’s got spooky ghosts, a dark and creepy environment and a girl we hope survives long enough to get her film developed.

Dead Rising: Compare ’til you drop

July 26th, 2008 by Alisha Karabinus

There may be a dearth of actual Dead Rising: Chop ‘Til You Drop screens, but we’ve been pretty rich in print media on the re-imagined game so far. The latest, from a French Nintendo magazine, show off some different angles from some of the scenes we’ve already seen, such as the psycho battle in the gun store.

There’s been some concern that there just won’t be as many zombies in the Wii version — and the number of zombies is pretty much the crux of the game — but considering we’re seeing screens from early in the game, it isn’t that surprising that there aren’t that many zombies. Until we see screenshots from a cramped area like the nightmarish Al Fresca plaza, we won’t really be able to judge how much, if any, the game has been downgraded in that sense. We’ve put together a couple of comparison shots after the break that demonstrate that there’s more to be hopeful about than many had thought.

Only here in this last set is there a difference, but it’s a vastly different angle. No matter the angle, however, things are looking up for this new vision of Dead Rising!

Alone in the Dark gets on the adversite bandwagon

November 19th, 2007 by David Hinkle

Filed under:

Atari sent word over that a teaser site for the upcoming Alone in the Dark game. In checking out the site now, you can see that there isn't much there beyond a small teaser trailer and ... a teaser trailer. So, that's about it.

The site promises to have a bit more content in about 25 days, where the secret of Central Park is to be revealed. Hopefully that's consolation enough for you.

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles is looking purdy

November 3rd, 2007 by Candace Savino

Filed under:

We've been showing you a lot of Ghost Squad videos lately, but that's no reason to forget the other rail shooter coming out this season. As you can see from the video above (which is titled "The Opening Video," but it's probably just a trailer), the game looks mighty fine, indeed. Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles is set for release on November 13, which we know will put some more hurt on a lot of wallets. We're definitely interested, at least.
