Final Fantasy III coming to the Virtual Console this month (in Japan)

July 9th, 2009 by David Hinkle

Square Enix continues its assault on the Virtual Console in Japan with the third installment in the Final Fantasy series, as Game Watch is reporting FInal Fantasy III will be available on the Virtual Console for 500 Wii Points some time this month. We’d be super excited about this, if not for the DS remake that had already released, which gave those of us in the West our first taste of this game. But, hey, we get that some people might want to play the original, and not the enhanced DS remake. Are you one of them?

[Thanks, Justin!]

Watch (and understand!) the Crystal Bearers intro

April 28th, 2009 by Andrew Yoon

There’s good reason to be excited over the upcoming Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers (wow, what a mouthful!). The production values of this upcoming adventure easily surpass anything we’ve seen from Square Enix on the Wii. Voice acting, cutscenes, great graphics, rocket launchers, and massive open-world gameplay — this is the kind of stuff we’ve wanted to see on the Wii.

The game’s intro has been released on the web, and GoNintendo discovered a subtitled version for us to enjoy and understand. Check it out after the break.

VC Friday: The adventure begins

April 24th, 2009 by JC Fletcher

Sigh. Enjoy playing Adventure Island: The Beginning this week, PAL Wii owners. We know we’ll see it in the US eventually, but it’s not today. We’ve waited so long for a new Master Higgins/Takahashi Meijin game, and we guess we can wait a little longer, but it’s pretty painful. Just thinking about rolling around in the jungle on a skateboard, with the wind against our grass skirt and a stone axe in our hand …

Also available today: Crystal Defenders R1, the Final Fantasy tower defense game, and a DSiWare sports game from Gameloft.

WiiWare:

  • Adventure Island: The Beginning (1000 Wii Points)
  • Crystal Defenders R1 (800 Wii Points)

DSiWare:

  • Real Football 2009 (800 DSi Points)

VC Friday: Bubble Bobble Plus Jealousy

April 10th, 2009 by JC Fletcher

One week after the launch of the DSi Shop, Nintendo already appears to be ignoring it, but that may be because Europe could turn out to use a (basically) monthly schedule like Japan. Anyway, that doesn’t matter. What matters is Bubble Bobble Plus!

Taito’s fantastic-looking Bubble Bobble sequel/remake arrives in the West today, and we are super jealous. Enjoy your four-player Bubble Bobble, PALs. We’re just going to be over here in North America, playing NES Bubble Bobble like total chumps.

More WiiWare Crystal Defenders in Japan next week

February 17th, 2009 by JC Fletcher

The WiiWare release of Square Enix’s Crystal Defenders tower defense game is episodic, based (loosely) on the three releases of Crystal Guardians for cell phones. Square Enix released Crystal Defenders R1 in Japan last month, and it is following up with R2 next Tuesday.

The new episode swaps out some character classes, adding new classes like the Hunter, Flintlock, and Berserker, while leaving others like the White Monk out. R2 adds a “Power Crystal” system that uses crystals of different colors to boost character stats. The new game comes with more difficult maps, as well.

Square Enix has yet to announce a release for the WiiWare Crystal Defenders games outside of Japan. But since it released the iPhone version here, we doubt it will pass up the opportunity to earn our Wii Points.

VC Monday Madness: Super Mario RPG and Clu Clu Land

September 1st, 2008 by David Hinkle

Filed under:

Our commitment cannot be measured. Here we are on a holiday, bringing you another VC Monday Madness. This week is a big one, so we decided to take the most care possible with this week’s video. The level of professionalism within will likely blow your mind. Hit it up above, then head past the break for more.

Clu Clu Land (NES, 1 - 2 players, 500 Wii Points)
Wii Fanboy says: do not download

Clu Clu Land isn’t really a bad game. I just didn’t like the controls, as they felt a bit clunky, and the game is pretty darn difficult. It’s clearly not for everyone.

Super Mario RPG (SNES, 1 player, 800 Wii Points)
Wii Fanboy says: download it!

Why are you reading this? Download it already.

Each week, we here at Wii Fanboy like to check out the latest Virtual Console releases in our VC Monday Madness feature, in the hopes that you can make the most sound decision possible regarding purchasing retro titles from the Wii Shop Channel. If you’re looking for more retro goodness, check out Virtually Overlooked, which talks about games that should be on the Virtual Console.

My Impressions as a King

May 13th, 2008 by Alisha Karabinus

Filed under:

Like a child counting down the days until Christmas, I’ve been looking forward to Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King. I’m a sucker for Square Enix anyway, and the prospect of a $15 game (even if there is pricey DLC) was too much to resist. That’s why it was so shocking to discover that my first few game days in Padarak were … well, boring. Everything was very controlled and linear, and I couldn’t run around and explore. Instead, I sat through cutscenes explaining more than I wanted to know at that point, when all I wanted to do was flex my new architek power. And then, once I was free, I had very little in the way of resources! Frustrating.

Several hours later, since I was still playing, I realized that maybe I wasn’t so bored after all. The simple directive of get more stuff sucked me in as soon as I had a free hand with the game, and before I even had time to think, I was obsessed with building up my little kingdom. Without my even realizing it, My Life as a King had gone from boring to fun.

While we have a full review of the WiiWare title coming later, initial impressions of the simulation are that it’s a lot like MySims, but better. My Life as a King manages to be even cuter, but with a gloss that’s unmistakably Square Enix, and the characters are engaging. Even the random chatter with the townspeople is somewhat interesting. There’s no awkward building; once you have the ability to construct something with your power, up it goes as directed. While it means the buildings are somewhat lacking in variety, it’s quicker and frees up more time to do the important things, like hunt down the darn moogle who makes your blueprints for new buildings.

Early impressions of the adventuring system are also positive; as soon as that opened up, it quickly became the most interesting part of the game (so far). Since you’re limited, in the beginning, in what you can build. it’s nice to know that you can easily multiply your stable of adventurers and send them out in search of knowledge and resources. Every time you build a house, you get two new people: one citizen, and one would-be adventurer. As soon as you can afford to commission them, they’re able to head out to the surrounding dungeons in search of elementite, the material used for your architek power.

Here at the beginning, there isn’t a great deal to do, other than marvel that there are only single parents here (several single moms and one single dad in my kingdom), and wonder where that damned Mogtillo gets off to when I need him, but the game days are short. Later, I’m sure managing everything will become a challenge of time.

Check back with us later for a full review, in which we’ll also take a look at the already-available downloadable content!

Chocobo plushes wark with the best of them

November 15th, 2007 by Candace Savino

Filed under:

Perhaps the only thing cuter than a chocobo plush is a chocobo plus with a mage outfit. Just look at him in his little hat! We want this so badly. If only we could justify spending $25 ($30 with shipping) on a plush. But hey, some of you might be more spendthrifty than us, so buy away!

Also, if you like these sorts of things, check out the Santa Claus and white mage chocobos after the break.

Chocobo’s Dungeon screens are disgustingly cute

November 2nd, 2007 by Candace Savino

Filed under:

We were trying to resist showing you screens of Chocobo's Dungeon: Toki-Wasure no Meikyuu. Then, the cuteness of it all overpowered us, turning us into sniveling piles of mush with a one-word vocabulary of "awwwwwwww!"

Then again, for us cynical folks at Nintendo Wii Fanboy, cuteness is like kryptonite. You know, since we can't resist it. Bad metaphor or not, the newest entry in the Chocobo series is being released in Japan this December.

We don't know what's cuter: this game, or chocobo baby. You decide.

FFCC: The Little King and the Promised Screenshots

October 30th, 2007 by JC Fletcher

In these latest screens of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Little King and the Promised Land, we can begin to see some hints of gameplay. Like King Story, the game involves building up a town using earned crystals. The crystals allow you to build different kinds of structures, like residences or weapon shops, that can increase different attributes of the town.

There are dungeons, but because young King Leo is too little a king for fighting, you choose parties of adventurers to explore them. It is unlikely that you as the player take part in this dungeon exploration, instead receiving treasure on a scale based on the attributes of the party.

It sounds like people expecting an action RPG like the first Crystal Chronicles game may be in for a disappointment when the game launches in March; however, if you're looking for something on the order of MySims with a coat of Final Fantasy paint, this might be worth your time. If it takes a Crystal Chronicles-style, uncomplicated approach to resource management and town-building, we may be up for it.
