Alex Ovechkin, left winger for the Washington Capitals, and his beautiful face will be gracing the cover of this years NHL 2K10. According to the Capitals website, a “fists clenched and mouth agape” Ovechkin image has been picked for the game’s cover, the third hockey game to use his image on the box.
Additionally, Ovechkin is participating in 2K’s first ever “public outdoor hockey motion capture session” next week in Las Vegas, taking time out of his trip to Nevada for the NHL Awards Show. Rather than employing ice, however, the session is said to be using a plastic sheet, hopes, and dreams. Unfortunately, this ain’t the hockey game with first-person fighting mechanics, so those of you looking to knock some teeth out of Ovechkin’s head all up close and personal-like may find yourselves wanting for more.

Ah, soccer … the sport of kings. Oh, wait. That’s chess. Or maybe that’s the game of kings. Anyhow, we’re talking about soccer. Well, soccer here in America, “football” to the rest of the known world. Ubisoft has a new soccer game coming out for the Wii called Academy of Champions, and despite the awkward combination of Pele (a legend) and Joel McHale (a goofball) at Ubisoft’s E3 presser, the game is actually fun. Especially when you’re playing with friends.
You can see new screenshots from the game below before heading beyond the break to read our hands-on and see the new trailer for Academy of Champions. It’s a bit like a Hogwart’s for soccer, except without all the death and killing and such. But is there magic? Oh yes … you can actually play as Sam Fisher in full-stealth mode. Find out more inside.

Electronic Arts is totally serious about including ill-tempered tennis legend John McEnroe in EA Sports’ upcoming Wii release, Grand Slam Tennis. According to EA, McEnroe will be just one of several “all-time greats” in the upcoming title, which is expected to take to the court on June 16.
Hopefully EA will package more than just McEnroe’s likeness with the game. We can’t think of a better use of the promised MotionPlus support than mirroring his juvenile antics on screen as we toss our Wii remote aside in disgust when calls don’t go our way.

EA is determined to release its new crop of sports game, whether or not Nintendo has released the Wii MotionPlus peripheral or not. As you may recall, EA revealed the next Tiger Woods game would feature MotionPlus support, as well as a new tennis game the company is developing, and both will ship to retail on June 16, 2009. EA Sports’ PR chief, David Tinson, said that both games “will be compatible, but not dependent, on WMP. They will ship with the functionality, regardless of when WMP comes to market.”
The peripheral is a tie-in with Wii Sports Resort, a game that was woefully absent from Nintendo’s big release list yesterday. Will MotionPlus and Wii Sports Resort be on store shelves by June 16? Nintendo has yet to comment on an exact release for the Wii Sports successor, but we’ll be sure to update you as soon as we hear.

That copy of Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen you stashed under the mattress to partly fund your early retirement just got a whole lot less valuable. The ESRB has rated the rare Enix RPG for a Virtual Console release, along with another, more widely known SNES gem: Super Punch-Out!!. Is Nintendo planning to release the classic pugilist title alongside its modern Wii equivalent, as it did in the case of Super Metroid and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption? Perhaps!
Those aren’t the only surprises in the latest ESRB ratings: Lonpos, a launch title for the Japanese WiiWare service no less, has also been classified. As it’s been a while, here’s a reminder of what it looks like:

Over at the official site for the Wii de Asobu (Play on Wii, or NEW PLAY CONTROL!) series, there’s a pair of Japanese commercials for the Mario Power Tennis remake, as well as a far lengthier gameplay trailer.
The adverts we can take or leave, consisting as they do of the usual telegenic Japanese families bouncing around their pristine living rooms. The gameplay clip is worth watching, as it displays the various shots that can be achieved through a well-timed flick of the wrist (top-spin, side-spin, slices, drop shots, etc.). We hope mixing up our shots actually has an effect on the game, because we always found Wii Sports tennis to be not-quite-as-advertised in this respect (though we’re willing to accept we just may be rubbish at Wii Sports tennis).
Oh yes, and these are non-embeddable, so you’ll have to go to the site to watch them. And they call this 2009!

“I predict that it will sell 4 copies total.”
“I feel that this game will bomb but only because of the olympic theme.”
“Ha ha ha!”
Those are just a small number of your initial responses to Sega’s prediction that Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games would sell four million copies worldwide. Not that we’re bragging at our readers’ expense, for we also pooh-poohed the notion. Over a year on from our mocking laughs, and Sega is now hoping to break two million by the end of this year — in the UK alone. Yeesh.
“Our aim is to hit two million by the end of 2008,” Sega UK sales director John Clark has told MCV (the most recent figures, which we assume are from before Christmas, have the title at around 1.75 million across the Wii and DS), adding that the game has more than a 30 per cent attach rate to British Wiis. We shall think twice before snickering into our Earl Gray and crumpets again.

How do we know? Because they’re throwing a lot of money into advertising the game. $10 million, to be exact, all in the hopes that you’ll want to hit the virtual slopes with Shaun and the gang.
The campaign started last night, where Ubisoft purchased all of the ad space on the season premiere of popular television show South Park. That’s not it, either, as it’s being reported that Shaun White will make appearances on ESPN shows on November 16th to promote the game. In addition to that, Ubisoft is also purchasing air time on select Viacom channels with the purpose of promoting Shaun White Snowboarding.
