de Sequel

Last year’s de Blob found a squishy, colorful place in all of our hearts and, more importantly, sold enough copies to make THQ keen on a sequel. Speaking to IGN, a representative for the publisher expressed pleasure at de Blob’s performance worldwide, promising that we can “expect to see more of de Blob in the future.” We’ll hold you to that, THQ.

Something else of interest in IGN’s article: NPD data shows that de Blob sold 230,000 copies in North America between September 22 and the end of 2008, whereas Wario Land: Shake It! moved only 150,000 copies in the exact same period. de Blob isn’t just a third-party “core” success — it’s even outsold a rival title from Nintendo!

Monolith reflects on Disaster non-sales, mentions a sequel

November 26th, 2008 by Chris Greenhough

It is difficult to envisage a second Disaster: Day of Crisis game, for two reasons:

  1. How any follow-up could top the unlikely mélange of disasters (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, terrorists, bears) that featured in the first game is beyond us. Perhaps an asteroid?
  2. Sales of the first game. Or the lack thereof.

Nevertheless, developer Monolith Soft is at least open to the idea of a Disaster 2. In an interview with Cubed3, Director Keiichi Ono revealed that “…there were so many wonderful options [in the game]. We would like to see the possibility for them, if we have chance to develop the sequel…” The sequel? Or a sequel? The difference is pretty crucial! While we’re not exactly taking that as rock-solid confirmation of Ray’s return, it’s an interesting remark.

To bring us back down to earth, Nintendo’s Hitoshi Yamagami reminded us of why the first game might not even come to North America, describing how Disaster is “performing lower than expected” at the tills.

Treasure considers Sin and Punishment sequel

October 23rd, 2007 by Candace Savino

If you shelled out the cash to buy Sin and Punishment on your Virtual Console, then you already know how awesome it is. If not, we've deployed some hypnotoads to find you and make you buy the game, so be prepared.

Now that we've sufficiently shoved the game down your throat communicated the brilliance of this game to you, excuse us while we squeal for a few seconds at the mere possibility of a sequel on the Wii. After all, we're only human (and part robot).

The source of our glee, you wonder? When asked about a possible sequel to Sin and Punishment, Treasure president Masato Maegawa told Nintendo Power, "When we were originally working on Sin and Punishment [for Virtual Console], there was some discussion utilizing Wii-like controls, and I think now that we're working more with the Wii, it is something we'd very much like to try."

We have just one message for you, Treasure: NOBODY LIKES A TEASE!

Rabbids just aren’t manly

October 4th, 2007 by Alisha Karabinus

Those poor Rabbids. Looks like they may need a testosterone infusion before taking the field against these guys. The latest in the long-running and hilarious promotional campaign for Rayman Raving Rabbids and its sequel couldn't be much more masculine if it tried -- it even features the obligatory fellas-in-a-locker-room bit. Nothing like a bunch of guys in towels to inspire consumer loyalty, right?

Our only disappointment thus far is that this time around, the campaign isn't nearly as pervasive. Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 is slated for release next month, and we have only a few Rabbid videos. How can we live in such a world?
