Rumor: Capcom to announce RE Code: Veronica Wii-make March 12

March 8th, 2009 by Griffin McElroy

The rumor mill has been spinning off its axis since Capcom project manager Matt Dahlgren told us that Wii-owning Resident Evil fans will be “very happy, very soon,” inciting feverish speculation on what project will instill said happiness. Game Focus’ recent interview with Dahlgren might put said speculation to rest — according to him, fans of Resident Evil Code: Veronica should pay close attention on March 12 for “news you should be very pleased with.”

The date that the pleasing announcement will apparently be made coincides with Capcom’s San Francisco launch event for Resident Evil 5, a perfect opportunity for the unveiling of a new project — but is an updated Wii version of Veronica the project everyone was hoping for? To tell the truth, we were holding out hope for a Resident Evil: Survivor remake. Oh, well.

Jagged Alliance DS: a time capsule from 1994

February 19th, 2009 by JC Fletcher

Empire Interactive sent out new screens of its Jagged Alliance remake today, causing a unique variety of nostalgia. We’re used to stuff like Mega Man 9 and Retro Game Challenge giving us the feeling of being back in the 80s, but we have as yet experienced very little nostalgia for mid-90s PC gaming. We think it’s the awkward, semi-realistic character portraits that so effectively take us back in time. Speaking of awkward character portraits, is it just us, or does that guy kind of look like a bearded, bronzed John Ritter?

Even without the warm feelings we have for kinda-ugly games of the past, Jagged Alliance DS could be good news for DS gamers looking for tactical strategy without a fantasy-RPG setting. According to the accompanying press release, JADS is coming out sometime this spring for $30.

Dead Rising’s ‘Sniper Mode’ crosses the line

February 18th, 2009 by JC Fletcher

In addition to the ‘Challenge Quests‘ revealed earlier this week, Capcom has shown the first screens of another new mode for Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop: “THE SNIPER” mode. On the face of it, a series of sniper-rifle-based challenges that task Frank with shooting certain targets within a strict time limit — red birds flying among flocks of blue birds, and zombies attacking people whom you are trying to protect — sounds like a fun arcade-style addition to the game.

But we cannot support the “Kobun Mask Boom” mission. This mission puts everyone in Servbot helmets, and you must determine which of the wandering Servbot-people are zombies by observing their clothing and behavior. It’s not the possibility of shooting innocent people that offends us — it’s the fact that this is almost a minigame about shooting Servbots, and that is not cool. Servbots are wonderful!

Exclusive: Cave Story’s new Sue sprite

Tyrone from Nicalis asked us if we wanted to run an exclusive Cave Story sprite comparison, and we responded by sputtering, mostly, and attacking the keyboard furiously with our frantic approval. The new sprite that Nicalis chose to share with us is Sue Sakamoto, whom you rescue fairly early in the game. Beyond that, we’re a bit shaky on what people would consider a spoiler, so we’re not offering any more biographical details. We’re impressed by how much the new sprite resembles her character portrait, and by the fact that her scar is visible.

This is the sprite that has really convinced us that the upgraded graphics are a good thing. They’re still blocky, but more expressive and with more variation between the characters.

After the break, we’ve got another sprite comparison, this one from the Nicalis blog. Huzzah!

We’re not going to stop talking about Cave Story any time soon. You may as well read up on it and join the discussion!

Wii Warm Up: Other new old games

November 2nd, 2008 by Alisha Karabinus

In the wake of Mega Man 9, and after Friday’s discussion about Play on Wii, we thought we might ask what other franchises you’d like to see redone, either as Play on Wii titles, or in a classic, old school style, as was done with Mega Man 9. Want to see the other Metroid Prime titles given a motion overhaul … or do you want to see a very small Samus putting the Metroid back into Metroidvania?

Next Monday is Mega Man 9 Monday

September 19th, 2008 by Chris Greenhough

Wherever you’re reading this, wave your hands in the air like you just don’t care, because Mega Man 9 has been dated for North America.

After months of build-up and hype and oh-mai-gawd-is-this-really-happening levels of disbelief, September 22 is the date we all need to circle with copious amounts of red. That’s 57 and a half hours away at the time of writing. Capcom, we think we might just love you. Best of all, North American Wii owners will be amongst the first to play the game — Japan has to wait a further two days, and owners of other console will have to exercise some patience (the PS3 will get it September 25, while the Xbox 360 version is due — snigger — October 1).

While you wait for your chance to take down the Robot Masters, pass the time by getting misty-eyed in our Mega Man boxart gallery.

3D Link to the Past ‘interests’ Aonuma

November 12th, 2007 by Chris Greenhough

Filed under:

OK, show of hands, please: who fancies a 3D remake of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past? If your arm just shot up, know this: you're far from alone. Series director Eiji Aonuma wants it, as well. Or at least, he's "very interested" in adding an extra dimension to what is arguably probably unquestionably the greatest Zelda game ever conceived.

Aonuma, who most recently acted as director on the DS's splendiferous Phantom Hourglass, revealed his wish in the latest issue of the Official Nintendo Magazine (the UK edition), stating that "The first Zelda game that I played and felt potential in was Link to the Past. I'm actually very interested in what it would be like if we remade that title as a 3D game."

Now, we confess that's a loooong way from us actually getting a 3D Link to the Past, but the mere fact that Aonuma has even considered this makes our legs go all wobbly. If you've never played the game, and therefore can't comprehend that reaction, then we suggest you stop reading, head over to the Virtual Console now, and commence downloading. For $8, it's a quite obscene bargain.
