Bioware You Vex Me

December 7th, 2011 by Stropp

Bioware why do you taunt me so?

Having participated in the SWTOR weekend tests, I do think that I would love to play this game, at least running one of classes through the story to the end. But I cannot. Australia is not in the list of launch territories. I even checked with my local EB Games the other day, and they don’t have a date at all for the Star Wars The Old Republic release in Oz.

So it is looking like post February for an Aussie release.

So it is quite vexxing to receive an email from Bioware saying that if I can preorder I can get into the early access. They even provide a preorder link. Of course if I do try to preorder, EA Origin will stop me.

Sigh.

North America also getting House of the Dead: Overkill bonus

Click for full cover.

The House of the Dead: Overkill collector’s edition bundle is one of the best preorder items we’ve seen in a while, so it was understandably upsetting when Sega initially revealed the package as a Europe-only bonus. You can pack that pitchfork away for another day, however, because Sega has confirmed it will be spreading the love to North America. Preorder Overkill at GameStop, GameCrazy, or Amazon, and you’ll have the option to bag all of this. Yum.

North America also getting House of the Dead: Overkill bonus originally appeared on Nintendo Wii Fanboy on Mon, 24 Nov 2008 11:55:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Golf With Style! (in Korea)

April 20th, 2008 by Eric Caoili

Filed under:

Publishers in South Korea are pulling out all the stops to make sure gamers pick up their launch titles when the Wii officially debuts in the country on April 26. Though these aren’t as glamorous (or as scandalous) as the Zack & Wiki pearl necklaces, Tecmo is giving away free shirts featuring characters Kooh and Arin with preorders for Swing Golf Pangya 2nd Shot.

Interestingly, the golf title will be released in Korea four months after the game arrived in the states, despite being a console spin-off of a Korean MMO. At least they’ll get free shirts to make up for the delay! And they’re still getting it before Europe (July 4th)!

[Thanks, Nick!]

Wii get! A look back at the beginning

November 19th, 2007 by Alisha Karabinus

Filed under:

Today may mark the debut of the Wii, but it's not necessarily been a year for everyone who's gotten one so far. Some Wii owners preordered in advance (like this blogger!), while others had to hunt for months in order to track down a system. We spoke with a few people from around the Joystiq network about their experience with snagging the year's most hotly-desired console -- and we'd love to hear your stories as well. Reminisce with these fine bloggers, and then let us know how you got yours. Was it a heroic effort, or were you one of the lucky ones to secure your little white box early? Since we're going to be celebrating everything Wii this week -- even more so than usual! -- we might as well start at the beginning.

Kyle Orland, Joystiq

Rather than kicking off with a more traditional pre-order story, we thought we would revisit something a little different. Back in January -- two months after the Wii's initial release -- Joystiq's Kyle Orland shared not his story, but the story of his sister's quest for a Wii. Paige spent a morning in the cold, driving with her mother from store to store, suffering through 30-degree weather and people who tried to cut in line. Even then (did we mention this was January?!), stores were handing out tickets and facing lines that were double the size of their shipments. The Wii craze was in full effect, and we'll bet that many consumers will be seeing the same thing over the holidays.

"Apparently, she ... hadn't gotten out of the house until 8. I had told her the night before that this should be plenty early enough to get a place in line for a 10 a.m. store opening. I was wrong. By the time they hit Circuit City at 8:15 a.m., there were already 20 customers lined up for the 16 Wiis indicated by a sign on the front door. What's worse, a surly line-goer told them the nearby Best Buy had over 50 people in line for only 20 systems.

Figuring the short Circuit City line held better odds than the reportedly overflowing Best Buy line, they stuck around until 8:30 a.m. when an employee gave out exactly 16 Wii vouchers, just enough to leave my mom and sister out in the cold. Desperate, the pair decided to swing by Toys 'R' Us (which was closed, with no signs of life or Wiis) and a nearby Gamestop (where the lights and a neon "Open" sign were on, but no employees responded to my sister's pounding on the door). This was the story my sister was recounting as they rolled towards the fifth and final store on their list, another Gamestop. As the minivan approached the parking lot, Paige cut her story short in mid-sentence. "Oh crap, there's a line," she said, "and there's a sign on the door, and the first word on it is 'Wii.' I'll call you back."

Fifteen minutes later, I was pleased to hear from Paige that the store had 17 systems, and that she had signed an unofficial sign-in sheet for the eighth one ...."

Chris Powell, PSP Fanboy, PS3 Fanboy

"I was actually the first person in America to buy a Wii when it officially went on sale. You see, I'm in the Air Force and am stationed on Guam, which is a U.S. territory and is about 14 hours ahead of EST. There's a saying that Guam is where America's day begins since it's the territory/state that's furthest ahead of all time zones. On the night leading up to launch, I was the first person in line at the midnight launch at Gamestop, and am therefore technically the first person in the United States to have purchased a Wii.

As soon as I bought it, I took it home and filmed several videos where I posted them at the Cheap Ass Gamer forums showing people the menu screen and how the VC worked and such."

(Clearly, a man with this level of dedication is writing for the wrong sites, amirite?)

Chris Chester, Massively

"I managed to avoid almost all of the hustle and bustle that most gamers had to subject themselves to in order to get their hands on that precious white cargo. Instead of wrangling pre-orders or waiting in line at a big box retailer, I tapped a secret connection... I'd like to say I met a contact in a clandestine location and was passed my Wii in an unmarked briefcase by a nondescript man in a trenchcoat and sunglasses. The reality is that I just worked for the Entertainment Software Association at the time, and our contact at Nintendo offered us access to the official supply. Gave her my credit card and shipping info, and my Wii showed up a few days after launch, no muss, no fuss. I guess that'll cost me some gamer cred."

And of course, the Joystiq crew put together all their own stories, which you can find here, thanks to the helpful search function.

TRU Sale: Buy 2 Wii games, get 1 free

November 19th, 2007 by Candace Savino

Filed under:

Whether you love to play them or just plan on giving them as gifts, there's always a reason to buy more video games. Fortunately, there are a few times in the year when our wallets feel some slight relief, and now is one of those times, as Toys "R" Us is currently holding a sale that will let you buy two Wii games and get one free. Now, normally you probably would have better luck finding good games in a brick and mortar store rather than online, since many of the better games online go out of stock quickly. Yet, before you run to your nearest Toys "R" Us store, you might want to know that a Super Smash Bros. Brawl preorder is eligible for the buy two, get one free deal.

Also of note, a preorder of NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams works with the sale, too. Normally Toys "R" Us doesn't include preoders in their deals, so either they made a mistake or are feeling extra generous for the holidays. Whatever the case, this might be the smartest way to pick up Brawl if you can find two other games that strike your (or someone else's, it is the holidays after all!) fancy. The sale ends Wednesday, so you'd best hurry if you want to take advantage of this offer.

One last thing: it seems that Toys "R" Us didn't get the memo about Brawl's delay, as they have the game listed for release in December. If you do preorder, don't expect your game to come until February!

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Japanese No More Heroes fans get their own beam katanas

October 25th, 2007 by JC Fletcher

The events of No More Heroes are catalyzed by Travis Touchdown's purchase of a beam katana in an online auction. Now preordering the game will enable Japanese gamers to reenact that part of the story, in miniature, and probably without the subsequent murders.

The "beam katana accessory" will be given out in limited numbers to people who reserve a copy of No More Heroes. It's made of metal (probably aluminum) and is 70 mm (2.5 inches) long. Dengeki considers it potentially suitable as a phone charm or as something to attach to a bag, although it may crunch your phone in your pocket, we think. Chances are most people will keep it in its packaging forever as a keepsake, a reminder of the time they went to a store.

More NiGHTS stuff we can’t have

October 18th, 2007 by JC Fletcher

Apparently the adorable NiGHTS figure wasn't enough. Now, in addition to that preorder bonus, Sega has announced a "DX Pack" for NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams that includes this too-nice-for-our-keys keychain that spins around in a very NiGHTS-like fashion.

The DX Pack also includes a set of three transparent file folders with NiGHTS art, so you can print out and distribute your NiGHTS fanfic in a classy manner. (Note: please do not write, print, store, or distribute NiGHTS fanfic.) The whole package will retail from Sega Direct for 7,140 yen ($61), and will resell for significantly more on eBay one day later..

We dream of preorder bonus figurines

October 16th, 2007 by JC Fletcher

We so wish we could get one of these NiGHTS figurines. The game may be about jumping through hoops, but there are just too many non-game-related hoops to go through before we could get this. We can't exactly go preorder a copy from a Japanese store, and we wouldn't be able to play it if we did, but ... look at the thing! It's so adorable.

This is apparently the first item in Pepper Shop's PaPETCH line of figurines, which means that we may see more game characters released in this simplistic, rounded style. And then we can report on not being able to get those as well!

Well, somehow the miracle of a NiGHTS sequel has happened; maybe if we bug Sega enough, we can get this or a bonus like it in the U.S.

Capcom tells you where your money should go

October 16th, 2007 by JC Fletcher

Your money has been earmarked for Resident Evil games-- Capcom is just letting you hold on to it for a while. To help Japanese gamers keep this in mind, they're giving out this fancy Umbrella Corporation wallet along with copies of Umbrella Chronicles preordered through their e-Capcom site. You can keep your money in there in the brief intervening period between Resident Evil purchases. People planning to buy Japanese copies of Umbrella Chronicles are rapidly accumulating quite a collection of stuff!

Similarly, all of your food has been determined to be the property of Sengoku Basara 2 -- oh, that doesn't work like it did for the wallet. Okay, they're giving away nice chopsticks along with preorders. Imagine a good joke in there or something.

Japan preorders 300,000 Wii Fit, printing of money to surely follow

January 1st, 1970 by Chris Greenhough

Filed under:

As we type, the world's crazy time differences mean that Wii Fit has been available in Japan for, ooh, a few hours at least.

How will it fare? We don't know for sure, and as our closest friend isn't a De Lorean-owning, wavy-haired scientist, the best we can offer is a guess. That said, the 300,000 preorders reportedly taken by Japanese retailers prior to the game's release tell us that Nintendo has probably just conjured up another mass appeal mega-hit. If all of those preorders are honored, that would also make Wii Fit a bigger opening week success than a certain other title, but we won't dwell on that, as it's proven a touchy subject recently.

Check back with us next week for the full lowdown on precisely how many Japanese people are precariously poised on their Balance Boards.
