The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS), has named Honorary Chairman and former President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, Ken Kutaragi, the recipient of the coveted 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award which will be bestowed at the Interactive Achievement Awards (IAA) ceremony on February 7th 2008 at Red Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas in conjunction with the annual D.I.C.E. Summit 2008. Congratulations Ken!
Recognized internationally as the “Father of PlayStation,” Kutaragi will be honored for revolutionizing the global in-home entertainment market with the creation and monstrous success of the PlayStation computer entertainment systems. The launch of the original PlayStation which was launched in 1994 and the PlayStation 2 which launched in 2000 went on to become the most popular gaming system of the era, resulting in combined shipments of more than 230 million units worldwide.
“Ken Kutaragi’s passion, innovative thinking and business savvy sparked a monumental movement that was unstoppable,” said Joseph Olin, president, AIAS. “If it wasn’t for Ken and his concept of the original PlayStation, there wouldn’t be the billion dollar industry there is today. His contributions have clearly set new standards for developers, publishers and consumers worldwide.” — Via Dicesummit
I’m still having problems with Second Life and because of that I am not able to do my regular Second Life routine like exploring and looking for Camping spots. Not only that, I plan to create a lot of Christmas Cards but can’t because Second Life won’t let me. Second Life still freezes on me. In fact, I have to use another computer just to give away the prizes.
Well, since I can’t login to Second Life without freezing, I played another game instead and that game is Final Fantasy VII for the PlayStation. I won’t be earning Linden Dollars from this game but at least I’ll have some good old fun. LOL!
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to save my game. Now, I’ll have to repeat everything again. Darn!
I think Linden Labs should stabilize the regular or the standard viewer first than spending too much time hyping their Windlight First Look Viewer where not everyone will be able to enjoy because not everyone has a cutting edge gaming machine. Yeah, Windlight looks great but can your machine handle it without spending $$$ upgrading it?
Also, it is nice to have something to pass your time while Second Life is down or when it’s under maintenance. I might even re-install Rakion Online. I have WarRock installed and it’s a Counter-Strike wannabe. The graphics are good but still Counter-Strike is better.
For the time being, I’ll stick with Final Fantasy VII.
GameCube adapters for PS2 controllers are nothing new, but this $13.70 one from UGame seems targeted to the Wii and, most importantly, has some wacky boxart. You should be well aware by now of our weak resistance to goofypackaging. They pull at us, whispering cryptic messages into our ears, like dead children trying to give us clues about their murderers.
There are so many odd things going on in this UGame cover:
The redhead witch in the flimsy blue dress is holding a golden Wii remote with an attached wand. Could it be some sort of Brando accessory that we haven't heard about yet?
The schoolboy chasing the woman looks too happy for his own good. Perhaps class just let out? Or maybe the leggy sorceress hypnotized the salivating fool, leading him to what will surely be his grisly death.
Above them, another young witch flies over the scene, straddling a torn PS2 controller cord fashioned into a broom. For reasons never mentioned, she is dressed as PaRappa.
Past the post break, we've got a larger image of the box, a photo of the actual product, and Clarissa Sabrina, the teenage witch. Wiggle your nose and head over there.
In an effort to catch up with Microsoft’s Xbox Live and Xbox Live Marketplace game/video download service, Sony is working on plans of their own to distribute video (like films and television episodes) and music via their own download service PlayStation Network. And there are also plans to transform the PlayStation 3 games console into a multimedia device capable of networking with other Sony hardware.
Sir Howard Stringer, Sony chief executive, said so during an interview in Moscow: “We are building a software infrastructure to distribute video and music, more particularly video, through the PlayStation Network. That is a Japanese and American combined effort to build a platform around a common software architecture to distribute video via the PlayStation network into the [PSP handhelds] and beyond. We are trying to get our devices to talk to each other efficiently. PlayStation Network should migrate from gadget to gadget. But initially it starts with PlayStation devices and then to TV and beyond. That’s the goal.”
He gave no timescale for the service, but the Financial Times quoted him as saying: “We won’t know how effective [the effort] is until early next year.” So the wait is on for 2008. Meanwhile, just go buy Blu-Ray films like the Spider-Man HD Trilogy or something!
Nintendo is now worth 10.1 trillion Yen (over US$86.5 billion!) in market value after the phenomenal success of their DS & Wii systems, which caused their worth to almost triple in value since the launch of the Wii console late last year.
Nintendo is now Japan’s third-most valuable listed company behind automaker Toyota Motor and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group. Nintendo’s Wii console and DS handheld machines have catapulted the once struggling brand past Sony’s latest PlayStation consoles and Microsoft’s Xbox 360. The stock rose 5.3% to 71,300 Yen yesterday, bringing its market capitalization to 10.1 trillion yen — a fivefold increase in the past two years.
Nintendo’s market capitalization is almost double that of Sony, whose total revenue is more than eight times as big as Nintendo’s. And Japan’s largest bank and analysts see shares setting more high scores in the future. KBC Securities analyst Hiroshi Kamide said: “There’s more upside than downside risk. There’s every reason to believe Nintendo will continue to execute its strategy well in expanding the gaming industry to strengthen its position… and really keep doing what it’s been doing regardless of what competition is doing.” Not surprising, since Nintendo estimate the total of DS units to reach 58 million by March 31, 2008.– Via Reuters
