Google Maps “My Location” Beta Could Simulate GPS On Mobiles

November 30th, 2007 by Shashank

Recently Google has introduced a brilliant feature “MY LOCATION” to its Google Maps that could simulate the approx GPS functionality to the mobile and smartphones without the GPS hardware like Apple’s iPhone, E61i and many other. The My Location feature is available for most web-enabled mobile phones, including Java, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, and Nokia/Symbian devices.

“It’s not GPS, but it comes pretty close (approximately 1000m close, on average),” the Mountain View, Calif.-based search giant explained on its website. “We’re still in beta, but we’re excited to launch this feature and are constantly working to improve our coverage and accuracy.”

How does it work?

The My Location feature in Google Maps collect  information from the broadcast towers near the mobile phone and approx the location of the mobile device in your map.

There you have it GPS functionality on non GPS enabled mobiles. The new feature looks promising and it’s still in beta phase for more explanation watch the Youtube video below :

November 13th, 2007 by Shashank

Opera Mini 4 free Mobile Web Browser

Opera has released their final installment of the free Opera Mini 4 mobile web browser that aims to take the mobile web surfing to the next level. The final version is released after three betas and the entire code of Opera Mini 4 is completely rewritten to make browsing experience better and comfortable. Opera Mini 4 is based on the same rendering engine as the Opera 9.5 desktop browser.

What’s new in the Opera Mini 4 :

  • PC synchronization with Mobile web browser
  • Overview mode for easy surfing
  • Text size changes dynamically to fit the width of your phone
  • Mouse cursor for easy navigation
  • Scrolling shortcuts:

2 - Page up
8 - Page down
4 - Go to the left one column
6 - Go to the right one column
5 - Zoom in and out

  • Toggle page view in different modes

By pressing the * and # shortcut keys, you could switch the page view to landscape mode

OM4 is light, easy to use and quickly gaining popularity. OM4 enables you to take your full Web experience and digital lifestyle with you — everywhere you go. Whether you want to access your mail, RSS feeds or bank information, Opera Mini is fast, safe and secure. Opera Mini 4 delivers several new features for quicker scrolling, navigation and page rendering. Opera Mini 4 is free, so download it now!

OM4 for Nokia mobile users Go to above page and select your handset and download the jad or jar file for installing via data cable.

Other users select their phone model from this list for installing via data cable through PC.

You can also download OperaMini 4 by visiting www.operamini.com using your phone and following the on screen instructions. Below is the screenshot of the welcome page after installing Opera Mini 4 on my e61i smartphone

welcome screen om4

When i compared the loading times of Nokia inbuilt web browser and the Opera Mini 4 i found the Nokia browser is much more faster than OM4 . Also when i tried opening up techlivez.com it takes forever to connect and couldn’t load the webpage while at the same time and same connection settings Nokia unbuilt web browser was quick to open the site. Below are some screenshots first one is Nokia’s browser , second one is Opera Mini 4 and the last one is google.com in OM 4, strange that Google wasn’t able to detect that the page was requested from Opera mobile version and instead of rendering a mobile Google version it shows the actual page as it appears on the desktop browser.

If you open google.com from Nokia’s inbuilt web browser it opens up a google mobile version which is optimised for mobile surfing and saves data costs.

Finally Purchased Nokia E61i Smartphone- Review

October 17th, 2007 by Shashank

nokia e61i

I have finally purchased the all in one wonder Nokia E61i three days back and its only now that i have freed myself to write this post. Actually its not just a mobile phone its a small PC in your pocket. The best Nokia phone i have ever seen in terms of features and pricing.

What made me zeroed upon Nokia E61i ?

I was looking for a mobile phone which should have all the basic features plus some smartphone features which would help me in increasing my productivity atleast a little but  . SO i started hunting down for mobile phones 10 days back. First i was not sure that i wanted to buy a smartphone as they are too costly for me to afford so i have three phones in mind :

Sony Ericsson K550i Price Rs 8,500/-
Nokia xpress 5700 Price Rs 12,000/-
Nokia N73 ME Price Rs 15,200/-

The idea of purchasing Nokia prism 7500 at Rs 9,500/- also run across my mind but really i don’t like prism design the only thing i like about prism 7500 is their TV commercial with a beautiful model..really that model is too sexy…I strongly feels that Nokia people should give the models name in their commercials so that we can google search the models for more pics  just kiddin..

Now 5 days back i really have no idea what E61i is, while surfing the August Digit magazine which has 39 cellphone tested i came across E61 and E62 again these phones are brilliant but camera is missing then i searched google for E61 and get across E61i and whooaa all the irregularities from the E61 is removed in E61i and they have added a two megapixel camera also, then my next move was to hunt for it reviews and video reviews at youtube .

So for two days straight i read over 100 Editors and user reviews about E61i and found 99% of them to be positive Plus i watched 20+ youtube videos from Unboxing to GPS and Camera reviews…

And 3 days back i have purchased E61i(Rs 16,750/-) and i am more than happy and completely satisfied by my purchase The only problem i faced was its Wi-Fi not configuring using ad-hoc mode then Vinod helped me out and voila surfing web on E61i is really an awesome experience.

Summerizing :

Pros :

  • Slim
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB, Infrared
  • QWERTY keypad
  • 2.8 inch 16 Million colours screen
  • 2 MP camera
  • Cam quality(in night also) is excellent for uploading to youtube
  • Complete Office in your hand(Word,Excel,Powerpoint)
  • It has Flash but never used it till now
  • Symbian OS 9.1 S60 3rd Edition User interface
  • A fast Adobe PDF reader
  • Mp3 and Video player
  • Huge battery life 9-10 hours talktime
  • Using Google Maps and satellite view is again great experience
  • Multitasking: i ve tried wifi, internet, word, sending attachment, video player, camera open at the same time.. now you must have understood why i am so happy about it.

Cons :

  • Camera quality is not that good in night
  • Width is more because of QWERTY Keypad
  • Music quality is not of Audiophiles grade

These are the only things i tested till now..will update this post if necessary.

Conclusion :

Superb Smartphone for wanna be PC in Pocket users.
