Nintendo games account for almost half of 2008 software sales

January 26th, 2009 by Chris Greenhough

In case you needed it confirmed yet again: Nintendo totally wins at selling stuff. Gamasutra went through the NPD statistics for 2008 software sales with a fine tooth-comb, and discovered that Wii and DS titles formed almost half of all games sold during 2008.

Of the 268 million games sold in the U.S. last year, 132 million (49%) were for Nintendo platforms, compared to 86 million (32%) for Sony consoles, and 50 million (19%) for Microsoft. Furthermore, the Wii software tie-in ratio isn’t looking too shabby: an even six games per system, an identical figure to that of the PlayStation 3.

For more statistics that make us want to joyously high-five a bobcat, hit up Gamasutra.

BioWare answers your Mass Effect frequently asked questions

November 21st, 2007 by supadupagama

Mass Effect for Xbox 360The staff at Mass Effect developer BioWare have taken the time to answer some Frequently Asked Questions. Here’s the huge list of FAQs about the game in general, its characters, universe, gameplay (RPG & combat), interface & controls, and future plans.

General questions:

1. What is Mass Effect?
Mass Effect is the latest Action RPG from Edmonton-based BioWare. For more information, let’s turn to Casey Hudson, Bob McCabe, Chris Priestly, and other members of BioWare’s fine development team.

Bob McCabe: Well, when I asked Casey about this he kept saying “Epic Sci-Fi with an immersive storyline set in an incredible science-fiction galaxy. And then he’d go on about inspirations for the game like the Design styles of Sid Mead or movies like Blade Runner and Alien.

2. Is Mass Effect played from a first-person or third-person perspective?
Bob McCabe: Preston, the lead designer, agrees with you that Resident Evil 4 is one of the best games ever. And I know he appreciates the camera angle of Resident Evil 4. On the other hand, he, and we, all know that the POV has to match the gameplay. And, if possible, alternative options would be nice.

We’ve designed how we want the game to play out, but once you get everything up and running, things tend to shift slightly this way or that. As such, the current POV is in flux.

3. Is Mass Effect a single-player only game?
Chris Priestly: Mass Effect is planned as a Single Player RPG.

4. Which engine is using Mass Effect? Is it Unreal 3?
Chris Priestly: Well, tools have been added to the existing engine and we’ve made some modifications and extensions for Mass Effect. But basically, yes.

Bob McCabe: Yep, this question has been answered before - but that’s OK! Mass Effect will, more or less, be using the Unreal 3 engine. I’m not a tech guy so I can’t answer this perfectly clearly, but the idea is that we’ve done a lot of work with the engine to fit it into our brand of RPG - but basically, yeah… Unreal 3.

5. When is the release date of Mass Effect?
Mass Effect’s release dates are November 20th in America & Canada, November 22nd in Australia, and November 23rd in Europe.

6. Will Mass Effect be coming to the PC?
Chris Priestly: Mass Effect is planned as an Xbox 360 exclusive title. This means we are not working on a PC version and have no plans to start making one.

System and game sales for October 2007 in the USA

November 18th, 2007 by supadupagama

Did you get a Wii yet? It'll be sold out soonOctober’s American video game sales data from NPD is in, and with the exception of Halo 3 making Xbox 360 sales fly last month, it looks like the other 11 months this year will show a clear pattern: the Nintendo DS and Wii are beating the other systems by a landslide.

This year’s video game sales have already achieved the annual sales number for 2005… and the two biggest months are yet to come. We’ll see not only record-breaking revenues but record-breaking year-over-year growth when the final numbers are tallied.

Video game hardware overview:
1. Nintendo Wii — 519,000
2. Nintendo DS — 458,000
3. Xbox 360 — 366,000
4. PlayStation Portable — 286,000
5. PlayStation 2 — 184,000
6. PlayStation 3 — 121,000

Video game software overview top 20:
Did you get Halo 3 for your Xbox 360 yet?1. Halo 3 (Xbox 360) — 433,800
2. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock w/ guitar (Xbox 360) — 383, 200
3. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock w/ guitar (Wii) — 286,300
4. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock w/ guitar (PlayStation 2) — 271,100
5. The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (Nintendo DS) — 262,800
6. Wii Play w/ remote (Wii) — 239,700
7. The Orange Box (Xbox 360) — 238,400
8. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock w/o guitar (PlayStation 2) — 231,700
9. FIFA Soccer 08 (PlayStation 2) — 129,700
10. Brain Age 2: More Training in Minutes a Day (Nintendo DS) — 116,900

While October’s 433,800 Halo 3 sales are nothing compared to September’s 3.3 million, nearly half a million more is nothing to sneeze at. In fact, Halo 3’s cumulative sales currently stand at 3.7 million, which outpaces the combined sales of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl at 3.6 million. The (Half-Life 2) Orange Box turned in at a disappointing 7th place in the software top ten, while Ratchet & Clank Future didn’t show up at all, despite having two weeks on shelves, reports 1UP.

Microsoft to offer free Xbox 360 Arcade download on November 15th, interview about Xbox Originals service

November 15th, 2007 by astrotriforce

Psychonauts for XboxXbox Originals is a new service for Xbox 360 that allows you to download classic Xbox titles such as Halo, Crimson Skies, Fable and Psychonaughts at a price of $15 (1,200 Microsoft Points) and will be debuting with the next system firmware update on December 4th.

The Xbox Originals program is part of the Xbox 5th Anniversary Live is 5ive celebrations, and in addition to offering downloadable Xbox games Microsoft will also be giving away a free Xbox Live Arcade game for 48 hours, beginning on November 15th, which is the actual 5th anniversary of Xbox Live. Most Live subscribers will be able to get Carcassonne for free, whereas Korean gamers can get Hexic 2.

In this interview Xbox Live group marketing manager Aaron Greenberg discusses the new Xbox Originals service, including the criteria for how new games will be added.

GS: How frequently will you be releasing Xbox Originals?

AG: It will be a very regular flow. Obviously we have a large library of backward compatible titles, so we’ll have access to that library, and over the coming year we’ll release a very steady flow. Ideally, it will be close to a weekly basis. We haven’t ironed out exactly the flow, but it should be similar to what you see for Xbox Live Arcade game releases.

GS: So the work you’ve done on backward compatibility is the basis for the Xbox Original releases?

AG: Exactly. You basically download the bits of the game and they have to have passed all our backward compatibility certification and testing. We’re only going to make available the ones that we know perform extremely well and have a high quality, if that gives you an idea of some of the titles you may see. To start, I think we have a good lineup. To be able to download them, own them, and if you delete them you can download them again, it’s very similar to how Live Arcade games work.

GS: Beyond having a game that runs well, what are the criteria for selecting Xbox Originals?

AG: We look at sales of the titles, which is obviously important, and we look at the performance of the game. We also look at a third criteria–if it’s a cult classic. Psychonauts is a great example of that. It’s a title that maybe didn’t sell extremely well, but we know is very popular with our community and is something people would like that is not available at retail anymore. We’ll continue to make those titles available.

GS: So there won’t be enhanced content or added online play in Xbox Originals?

AG: No. What we’re basically doing is taking the games as they were originally created and maintaining that. We want to preserve the integrity of what that original game experience was like. If they have online multiplayer, it’s there. Whatever functionality was built into that original game is what people will get. We’re not going back and getting the teams that made the game and having them open the vault and recode them or anything like that.

GS: Will achievements, in-game messaging, and the rest of the Xbox 360 trapping be integrated somehow?

AG: It will perform just like a backward-compatible game, so you’ll have limited access to those things. You’ll be able to hit the guide button to get into the dashboard, but you won’t have access to in-game messaging and things like that.
