Wii Warm Up: Surviving the onslaught

August 17th, 2008 by Alisha Karabinus

Filed under:

The Wii seems to be getting a lot of one thing lately: horror games. Fatal Frame IV and the newly-announced Cursed Mountain spring immediately to mind, along with Dead Rising (hey, it’s got zombies who wish to eat you, and that’s pretty horrifying), rumors of Resident Evil 5 (as well as the other Resident Evil games we’ve seen on the system), and, uh, Sadness (lol). That’s not even all of the games that fall under the horror umbrella — the Wii library already boasts several entries, and will soon be packed with more horror than you can shake your pitiful flashlight at.

We’ve established the what — now let’s talk about the why. What’s with all the horror games? Is it because it’s one genre that has proven popular with all types of gamers, from the most casual to the hardest of the hard? Is it because the Wii controls can add to the immersion factor of the game, and immersion drives horror? Or is there another explanation?

We’re looking forward to being scared by Fatal Frame

We’ve been keeping a secret. You see, we’re absolutely scared to death of Fatal Frame IV: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse. That’s not going to stop us from picking the game up and playing the crap out of it though. We just felt we needed to share that with you all.

The above video for the game does a good job of depicting exactly what scares us. It’s got spooky ghosts, a dark and creepy environment and a girl we hope survives long enough to get her film developed.

Dead Rising: Compare ’til you drop

July 26th, 2008 by Alisha Karabinus

There may be a dearth of actual Dead Rising: Chop ‘Til You Drop screens, but we’ve been pretty rich in print media on the re-imagined game so far. The latest, from a French Nintendo magazine, show off some different angles from some of the scenes we’ve already seen, such as the psycho battle in the gun store.

There’s been some concern that there just won’t be as many zombies in the Wii version — and the number of zombies is pretty much the crux of the game — but considering we’re seeing screens from early in the game, it isn’t that surprising that there aren’t that many zombies. Until we see screenshots from a cramped area like the nightmarish Al Fresca plaza, we won’t really be able to judge how much, if any, the game has been downgraded in that sense. We’ve put together a couple of comparison shots after the break that demonstrate that there’s more to be hopeful about than many had thought.

Xbox 360 — six zombies

Wii — six zombies

Only here in this last set is there a difference, but it’s a vastly different angle. No matter the angle, however, things are looking up for this new vision of Dead Rising!

The Darkness 2 sequel underway for Xbox 360 and PS3 in late 2008

November 20th, 2007 by supadupagama

The Darkness for Xbox 360The Darkness 2 is underway. A comic publisher Top Cow Comics employee Matt Hawkins, who produces The Darkness comic book series, let it slip that a sequel to The Darkness game is in the works. To quote: “There will be a sequel to The Darkness video game sooner [rather] than later.”

Developer Starbreeze Studios is currently hard at work on the second FPS-action horror quest, which is said to be for Xbox 360 and PS3, and is set for a late 2008 / early 2009 release. The sequel is said to follow on directly from events in the first bloodbath of a game, according to CVG.

Of course publisher 2K Games denies this as just a rumour, meaning we’ll have to wait for the official confirmation from them in 2008.

Mario: This time he’s rated M for murder

We can't decide whether this X-Play short is funny or disturbing. Satire is all well and good, but when it's turns someone that we love even more than the Canadian Prime Minister into a serial killer, it's just a little hard to swallow.

Anyone else having nightmares tonight?

Manhunt 2 video review

November 7th, 2007 by supadupagama

Manhunt 2 also on WiiManhunt 2 for the PS2, Wii & PSP is the sequel to Rockstar’s sinister action game about a man who wakes up in a living nightmare where he is being stalked for sport and must sneak through the shadows and kill by whatever means he can devise in order to fight his way out. The sequel picks up with a new lead character, new gangs, a new storyline with gruesome twists and turns, but mostly just killings.

This Manhunt 2 video review shows if the game’s a murder mystery or just murder?

If you’re like me not interested in playing this game, but still want to know what the horror story behind the game is, then check out this Manhunt 2 plot synopsis.

Rumor: Manhunt 2 being pulled from Target stores

November 4th, 2007 by Candace Savino

Filed under:

This has yet to be confirmed, but some Target insiders are claiming that the retailer will not be selling copies of Manhunt 2, the controversial Rockstar game. The rumor was started by a Target employee at the Evil Avatar forums, and was later supported at GoNintendo by an electronics specialist at the retail chain.

Adding further basis to the rumor, Target's website states that the PSP version of Manhunt 2 is not available in stores, although it can be purchased online. The PS2 and Wii versions are not even listed on the site.

If this rumor turns out to be true, it won't be good news for Rockstar, especially if other retailers follow suit. As of now, though, these rumblings apply to Target stores only.

Sadness delayed again, vaporware suspicions refuse to go away

November 1st, 2007 by Chris Greenhough

Filed under:

NIBRIS' Sadness tweaked our interest from the get-go, but we'd be lying if we said the ... uncertain path of its development so far didn't concern us. Since it was announced, one publisher has jumped ship, the game has been delayed on more than one occasion, and we've been dripped information and media (none of which hints at there being any real content) at a painfully slow pace.

As we see it, NIBRIS has been monumentally unlucky, work on the game has ground to an ignominious halt for the time being, or Sadness -- gulp -- doesn't actually exist.

Things aren't about to get any rosier, either. In an email received by a NeoGAF poster, NIBRIS revealed that Sadness wouldn't be on shop shelves before 2009 (let us not forget the game was once slated for a Q4 2007 release), and that its website would be updated soon with more news. Call us cynical curmudgeons all you like, but holding your breath for said update probably isn't a good idea in this case.

It's a tremendous shame, really, as we want Sadness to be the real deal, and we want it to be fantastic. The premise, design and concepts we've heard so far all hint at a promising, unique project. Needless to say, if NIBRIS does manage to pack as much intrigue into Sadness as we've seen during its development, we'll be perched on the very edge of our seats come release day.

Angry Video Game Nerd reviews Halloween on Atari 2600

October 31st, 2007 by supadupagama

The Halloween movie on DVDThis is the thirty-fourth in a series of bad video game reviews by the Angry Video Game Nerd. This time he reviews Halloween on Atari 2600. This movie-based game was released back in 1983, made by Wizard Video Games, after the 1978 John Carpenter’s Halloween independent horror film.

On the spookiest day of the year The Nerd finds himself in a battle against a crappy game. Happy Halloween!

He also kind of reviews Haunted House and Frankenstein’s Monster.
