Unreal Tournament meets Super Mario

April 27th, 2008 by Candace Savino

If any of you own either the PC or PS3 versions of Unreal Tournament 3, you might enjoy downloading this Mario-inspired map made by FrontAXL. The blocky platforms will look familar to players of the original Super Mario Bros., as well as many of the background elements. It’s not an exact replica (nor is it meant to be), but the similarities are impossible to deny. Also, the PC version of the map includes music and sounds from the beloved classic.

Check out the awesome in-game video of the stage in action after the break, along with some other screens. You can also download the stage here at the UT3 forums.

No Wii Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe due to Unreal Engine

April 21st, 2008 by Candace Savino

When we heard about Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, the first thing we asked ourselves was, “Why?” The second thing we asked ourselves was, “No really, why?” Then we started to wonder, though, why this game wasn’t heading to the Wii. It’s not that we’re going to miss it (although we’re sure some of you might, and that’s completely fine). It’s just that the decision to snub the Wii doesn’t seem to make any business sense. The Wii does have a pretty large userbase, after all, and according to the Mortal Kombat series’ co-creator and executive producer, Ed Boon, Armageddon did well on the Wii. In Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, were graphics really going to be that much of an issue?

As it turns out, the issue is the Unreal Engine. Since the newest version of the engine doesn’t officially exist for the Wii, the developers thought it would be too challenging to bring the game to Nintendo’s console. Yet, according to Boone, they’re not against the idea. If they’re waiting for Epic to support the Unreal Engine on the Wii, though, they better not hold their breath. Whether or not Midway will one day use the unofficial engine and port the game to the Wii remains to be seen.

Epic: We aren’t planning on any Wii projects

October 5th, 2007 by David Hinkle

Mark Rein is talking about the Wii again, this time commenting that his company is sticking to work on consoles that can push the graphical envelope. Even though a lot of developers and publishers are looking to the Wii for some future projects due to its success, Epic could care less.

Rein comments "I don't think there's a lot of money on making engines for the Wii because the big software dollars right now are being earned on Xbox 360 and they're going to be earned on PlayStation 3, and I think unless you're going to sell your engine to Nintendo, you're going for scraps on that platform." Rein also states that he thinks the big bucks are to be made on the Xbox 360 and PS3, where the budgets for games are a lot higher.

Today’s ridiculous rumor: Bioshock for the Wii

September 26th, 2007 by David Hinkle

Filed under:

Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey is of the mind that 2K's much-hyped game Bioshock could find itself on the PS3, Wii, PS2 and handhelds sometime in the future. Hickey says this won't happen for quite some time, though, stating that he believes the game could make its way onto these platforms sometime in 2009.

While we've seen Rockstar's own RAGE engine adapted to the Wii in the Nintendo console version of their Table Tennis game, we wonder if the Unreal Engine III that powers Bioshock could even be augmented for use on the Wii. We've heard Epic's Mark Rein state that he doubts the system can handle it on multiple occasions, so we wonder if 2K could even get it to work with the Wii.

Unreal Engine 3 being adapted for Wii

January 1st, 1970 by David Hinkle

Filed under:

Yup, Unreal Engine 3 is headed to the Wii, but Epic won't be handling it. No, instead the engine will be adapted for use on the Wii by an unnamed licensee. Mark Rein, who you all know full well, commented as such during a recent interview with Kikizo.

"It's their own port, in the same way Ubisoft brought Unreal Engine 2 to the Wii [for Red Steel]," he said. Of course, he couldn't help but toss in his own pessimistic view regarding the whole idea, adding "I just don't see a big market there to bring this big hulking memory intensive engine over to a much smaller system."

And now, we're left wondering what the engine is being adapted for. Anyone care to speculate?
